On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, The Dewskis took on The Sharknados in the Fall 2013 Mill Creek Park Wiffleball Tournament Final. The Dewskis, Joe Gill and Sean McNamara entered the final as the number one seeded team. The pair cruised though the opening round going 4-0 and allowing just 2 runs. The Dewskis would advance to the final with a decisive 2-0 win over the 4th seeded Benchwarmers in the semi-final. The Sharknados finished round-robin play with an even .500 record at 2-2, good for the 3rd seed. The semi-final would pit them up against the surprising #2 seen The Murray Men. The Nados cemented their spot in the finals as they pulled off the upset in a dramatic 2-1 contest.
In Game 1,The Dewskis would hold the home field advantage as the higher seed coming in. Having not allowed a run since the first inning of the first game of the tournament, The Dewskis pitching staff came in with confidence sky high. The Sharknados, however, didn't care. In the top of the first, Steve Casavant and Rob Cooper jumped all over Joe Gill. A bases loaded walk of Casavant, set Cooper up for a towering grand slam and an early 5-0 lead for The Sharknados. The Dewskis would get 2 back in the bottom of the 1st, as Cooper struggled to find his rhythm on the hill. In the top of the 2nd, Casavant would do something that had not been done all tournament long. Steve struck for a 2 run home run off of Sean McNamara, pushing the lead to 7-2 and becoming the first person to score off McNamara in the entire tournament. Down 5, The Dewskis found themselves in unfamiliar territory entering the bottom of the second inning. Turns out, The Sharknados putting up a 7 spot was like poking a sleeping bear with a stick. The Dewskis awoke from their slumber in the bottom of the 2nd as Gill and McNamara fought back for 7 runs of their own, behind 3 home runs, 1 from Joe and 2 from Sean, turning the tables on Rob and Steve. With the newfound 9-7 lead, The Dewskis pitching staff would finally settle down and get back to their stingy ways through the 3rd and 4th innings, allowing no more runs and taking Game 1. Game 2 presented The Sharknados with a must win and home field advantage. The two sides would trade scoreless innings through the first and second innings. It was the top of the third where The Dewskis broke through the deadlock. With 2 on and Joe Gill at the plate, Casavant was running low on balls. McNamara offered to replenish his stash with collection from the backtop, but Steve declined, commenting, "I have 3, that's all I'll need." Turned out all he needed was one, as Joe Gill took exception to the trash talk and provided his answer via a 3 run game breaking blast. Again, upon gaining the lead, The Dewskis pitching took over down the stretch. Gill would toss a 1, 2, 3 bottom of the 3rd and McNamara would complete the no-hitter with a 1, 2, 3 bottom of the 4th, for the victory and the Championship!! The Dewskis 3 - The Sharknados 0
Congratulations to the Fall 2013 Mill Creek Park Wiffleball Tournament Champions, The Dewskis. The Dewskis completed the tournament an impressive and undefeated 7-0, scoring 30 runs and allowing just 9. Joe Gill and Sean McNamara consistently baffled the opposing teams hitters with excellent pitching. Their offense was always there when needed most as they both displayed an ability to perform in the clutch. The Dewskis will forever enjoy the honor of winning the first ever Mill Creek Park Tournament, and they will hold the Cup until they defend their title in the Spring 2014 Tourney. Till next time.
